Jamaican beef patties are delicious flaky, golden puff pastry filled with a spicy and seasoned beef filling.

Growing up, one of my favorite appetizers to have at holiday parties were meat pies or Jamaican beef patties. There’s just always been something about having that spicy beef filling encased in a hot and flaky dough that makes these patties down right addicting!

During the holidays I was always on duty with my mom in the kitchen, and I can remember waking up early just to start preparing the dough for the patties. This was always my least favorite part because the dough for traditional Jamaican beef patty can sometimes be difficult to get right. I dreaded messing it up, and till this day it’s something that I still think about whenever I make these.

To combat this and to make preparing this recipe for the holidays easier; I found that Pepperidge Farm® Puff Pastry was the answer to my prayers! From frozen dough to light, golden flaky deliciousness; instead of having to worry about preparing both the dough and filling, now all I had to concentrate on was just the filling. I picked up the puff pastry sheets at my local grocery store in the frozen food aisle, and let them thaw 1 hour before using them.

The filling for these Jamaican beef patties consists of lean ground beef seasoned with curry, thyme, garlic, chili powder, and habanero peppers. Filled with flavor, and a little on the spicy side because of the addition of the habanero peppers. If you want to make these less spicy just leave the peppers out. These Jamaican beef patties are the perfect appetizer to have for any holiday party because they are down right irresistible, and with the help of Pepperidge Farm® Puff Pastry you’ll have more time to entertain and eat with your guests because all the hard work has been eliminated.  Check out the recipe below!

Jamaican Beef Patties

Ingredients

  • 1 package of Pepperidge Farm® Puff Pastry
  • 1 tablespoon of olive oil
  • 1 pound of lean ground beef
  • 1 small red onion, chopped
  • 2 habanero peppers, seeded and finely chopped
  • 2 teaspoons of seasoning salt
  • 6 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon of crushed red pepper
  • 2 teaspoons of curry
  • 2 teaspoons of thyme
  • 1/2 cup of green onions, chopped
  • 1 cup of beef broth
  • 1/4 cup of unseasoned bread crumbs
  • 3 tbs soy sauce
  • 1 egg, beaten

Instructions

  1. Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large saucepan over medium heat.
  2. Add the ground beef and chopped onions, and cook until the beef has browned. Drain any excess liquid from the meat.
  3. Add in the habanero peppers, seasoning salt, garlic, crushed red pepper, curry, thyme, and green onions. Saute for 2-3 minutes.
  4. Add in the breadcrumbs, soy sauce, and beef broth and simmer on medium heat until the majority of the liquid has evaporated, 7-10 minutes. The filling should still retain some moisture.
  5. Remove from heat, and set aside to cool completely.
  6. Preheat oven to 400°.
  7. Roll out your puff pastry sheets and cut each sheet into 6 squares.
  8. Add 1 tablespoon of the beef filling to the center of the squares; then fold the puff pastry over and seal by pressing down the corners with a fork.
  9. Brush each patty with the egg wash, and bake for 15-20 minutes until the outsides of the turnovers turn golden brown and flaky.
  10. Serve hot!

I tried making beef patties once a few years ago and failed on the dough. I have been meaning to remake them. Yours look delicious! Love the use of the puff pastry sheets and that filling sounds incredible.

Your beef patties look like the perfect treat for in between. Do you make them for special occasions? My mother in law in India makes similar ones with beef, the seasoning is similar too just the dough is puff pastry dough. Thanks for the great share 🙂

I love making beef patties, but I’ve never made them with puff pastry. That’s so smart, since making the pastry is always the worst part. I can’t wait to try these!
